The MA program in Cultural Management is aimed at students with completed BA degrees in any academic field who would like to apply their knowledge and skills in the cultural and creative sectors. Its overarching goal is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge for cultural management and the application of cultural policies, of the cultural and creative industries and their contribution to the development of society as well as their inclusion in the economic sector.
The program offers knowledge and develops competences and skills for managing cultural institutions and organizations, for methodologically conceiving of and developing projects, for managing and evaluating projects in the cultural sphere, for organizing and promoting cultural events and products. An important aspect of the program is the adoption of a new approach - the participative approach - to the cultural sector, aiming at actively engaging citizens in cultural processes. The MA program provides an opportunity to study a foreign language not only as a means of communication in the workplace but also as a way of bridging distances and enhancing the understanding between people and cultures. The emphasis falls on acquiring specific vocabulary so as to develop skills for social and business communication and to respond to policies for European mobility and exchange of managers, artists and professionals in the creative sphere.
The aim of the study at the MA level is to deepen and focus the knowledge and competences acquired during previous degrees at the BA level by offering additional wide-ranging interdisciplinary professional education in the sphere of cultural management and cultural entrepreneurship. In parallel to this, the curriculum opens the scope for enhancing the understanding of culture and society, of the values and ethical norms at stake in the dialogue between cultures and individuals.
The mission of the program is in tune with the contemporary social and economic realities in the country in the aftermath of Bulgaria becoming an EU member state. Its goal is to provide knowledge about the culture and cultural heritage of Bulgaria and Europe, about contemporary cultural policies and strategies which function towards the democratization of society and the improvement of the quality of life. In the course of study the MA students will acquire further knowledge about the cultural and creative sectors, about cultural and creative industries and the non-industrial cultural sectors, including their social and economic contributions to social development. Among them is also cultural heritage viewed both as value and as a means for developing identities and weaving the fabric of society today. A key feature of the program is located in the closely-knit cooperation between university based academic learning and the educational possibilities offered by partners in the real cultural and creative sector which is geared toward acquiring practice-oriented skills in an European context. The MA program offers opportunities to study with well-established and prominent academics and professionals with considerable international expertise in the cultural sector in Europe. The curriculum includes Masters Classes taught by an international body of university lecturers and established professionals in the sphere of cultural management from Europe and beyond. Some of the lecture courses are conducted in English therefore English language competence is a requirement for prospective applicants. This new approach to international exchanges of knowledge is actively supported by Plovdiv 2019 Foundation, Plovdiv Municipality, Municipal Institute Ancient Plovdiv, One Foundation for Culture and Arts, the French Cultural Institute in Bulgaria, the Goethe Institute of Germany, the Cultural Institute of Austria in Bulgaria, the Spanish Cultural Institute Cervantes, ENTATC, Erasmus+ Program, etc.
Yet another specific feature of the program are the practicums and internships which aim at providing an environment for acquiring practical skills and for applying theoretical knowledge in real working conditions at different levels of management and partnerships: on the one hand, state, association, public, private and on the other, local, national, regional, international. The MA program provides education in real working conditions in the cultural sector the established close cooperation between the University of Plovdiv and Plovdiv 2019 Foundation, the Municipal Institute Ancient Plovdiv, One Foundation for Culture and Arts, and the cultural operators in the country. Within the framework of Erasmus+ Program and with the support of foreign cultural institutions in Bulgaria the program offers opportunities for internships abroad which is why foreign language competence (in French, German and Spanish) is an advantage. To this aim the University of Plovdiv also offers additional foreign language education within its Centre for Foreign Language Learning.
